In spite of the fact that being constructed by French architect Alfred Foulhoux, the building has had many owners over the years, ranging from the Japanese Governor Yoshida Minoda during the Second World War, to the last Vietnamese king, King Bao Dai. Displays concerning the Vietnamese resistance against the Americans including many collections of weapons used by the Vietnamese forces to struggle with the Americans, as well as U.S. medals and other such tools of the war are also represented here.

However the most outstanding items in the museum’s collection are two river boats made from wood, long and thin in shape that were used by locals to travel and transit items up and down river dating back to the 13th century. Both of them were found in the Saigon River in Thu Duc Ward which was built between 1885 and 1809 and used as the Cochin-china governor’s palace.
